iFixit’s teardown of Apple’s iPhone Duo gave the foldable phone a provisional 5 out of 10 repairability score on October 25, the highest score iFixit has given any foldable it has torn down, while flagging the hinge and inner display as the weakest points behind reports of cracked screens.

The score is provisional because replacement parts for the iPhone Duo are not yet sold separately, iFixit said. Apple launched the device on September 9 and began selling it on October 23 at a starting price of $1,999 for the 256GB model, with a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display.

The Verge reported the same day that iFixit’s findings line up with user complaints about the iPhone Duo’s inner screen cracking and developing bright lines along the fold.

What iFixit found inside the iPhone Duo

iFixit’s team, led by Elizabeth Chamberlain with Arthur Shi and Shahram Mokhtari, praised the phone’s two batteries, rated at 7.5 Wh and 11.6 Wh for a combined 19.1 Wh, for using an electrically releasable adhesive that makes them easy to remove without a heat gun or prying tools.

The outer screen survived disassembly intact, and the logic board sits in a fairly flat layout compared with other folding phones iFixit has opened. Those strengths, combined with a nano-texture cover glass that hides the crease well while folded, are what pushed the score to 5 out of 10.

Opening the phone requires five different screwdriver types, and the inner display itself is built from more than ten ultrathin layers and adhesives, which is where most of iFixit’s point deductions came from.

Why the hinge is the weak point

iFixit’s hinge analysis, based on a 3D model and CT scans, points to stress concentrating where the display cable passes through the center of the hinge. The report said a center support bar that does not drop far enough when the phone is open could create a stress hotspot at that point, though iFixit was careful to call this a hypothesis rather than a confirmed cause of the cracking reports.

The team also found fine, fluorescent dust had already reached inside the hinge mechanism on their unit, which they said was making the hinge crunch when opened and closed.

iFixit noted that removing the nano-texture cover layer makes the iPhone Duo’s crease more visible than on Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8, a trade-off buyers do not see until they have already opened the phone’s hinge mechanism once.

The inner display is the screen owners use for most day-to-day tasks on a book-style foldable, so a hinge-related fault there carries more weight than a similar issue on a phone’s secondary or outer screen would. That is also why iFixit weighted the hinge and inner display so heavily in its overall score, even with the battery and logic board scoring well.

What a repair actually costs

Apple charges $999 for an out-of-warranty inner screen replacement on the iPhone Duo. The outer cover layer is far cheaper to replace: $49 without AppleCare+, or $19 for AppleCare+ subscribers.

iFixit estimated an inner screen repair would take a typical DIYer 3 to 5 hours, a figure based on comparing the job to a similar repair on Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold. The company’s cameras, a 48MP f/1.6 main sensor, a 48MP f/2.2 ultrawide, a 12MP f/2.2 outer selfie camera, and an under-display inner selfie camera, add further layers a repair technician has to work around.

RepairCost without AppleCare+Cost with AppleCare+
Outer cover layer$49$19
Inner foldable display$999Not disclosed by Apple in iFixit’s report

What this means for foldable phone buyers

A 5 out of 10 score is still iFixit’s highest for a foldable, which says as much about how poorly the category has scored until now as it does about the iPhone Duo’s own design. The Galaxy Z Fold8 and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, the two phones iFixit’s report compares the Duo against, remain the closest reference points for buyers weighing repair risk against Apple’s first folding phone.

iFixit said it will revisit the score once genuine replacement parts become available for sale, which typically happens a few months after a new iPhone’s launch.

FAQ

Is the iPhone Duo’s screen covered under warranty if it cracks on its own?
iFixit’s report does not state Apple’s warranty position on hinge-related cracking; its $999 out-of-warranty price applies to screen damage outside Apple’s standard coverage.

Can I repair the iPhone Duo myself?
iFixit says the battery and outer cover layer are comparatively easy to remove, but the inner display repair needs five screwdriver types and an estimated 3 to 5 hours, and replacement parts are not yet sold separately.

How does the iPhone Duo’s score compare with other foldables iFixit has tested?
iFixit’s report calls 5 out of 10 the highest score it has given any foldable phone so far, ahead of previous scores for Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series, though the score could change once Apple or third parties begin selling individual replacement parts.
